R.E.A. Holdings plc, established in 1906, is a UK public company listed on the London Stock Exchange and, through its subsidiaries, is engaged in the operation of oil palm plantations in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
At the end of 2006, some 25,000 hectares had been developed, of which some 16,000 hectares is currently in production. The group operates two oil mills and a palm kernel crushing facility.
REA has a permanent workforce of some 4,000 people, housed in a network of villages constructed by the group. All villages are equipped with portable water, electricity and a range of amenity buildings including mosques, churches, schools, creches, clinics and shops.
A small specialist team manages an active community development programme in the local villages and oversees smallholder farmer programmes. A conservation area in excess of 3,000 hectares has been set aside to be managed by an internationally recognised conservation expert.
